When I look back 30 years on this sordid episode in a California Zen Center -- the last time I ever set foot in any of Roshi's communities around North America -- I'm amazed at what went down in those 5 months in 1996. A famous singer had molested his daughter for years and then bought her silence when she grew up and told his friends - Ignoring the chaos this caused in his old neighborhood, he moved his daughter to LA where he proceeded to take over a Zen community by buying off the monks. He moved into the mountain Monastery and soon the world was coming to interview him in his cabin under the pines. His brilliant wit and winning charm had most of them convinced they had found a celebrity successor to the 90-year-old Japanese Master who had selflessly taught Zen to Americans for 30+years. When a woman who had witnessed the abuse of young girls and others by the famous man, shows up, he demonizes her as a "scorned ex-girlfriend" and gets her banned and shunned. He hires monks and roommates to spy on her, and spreads false stories about threats to his life and reputation. The sleepwalking Zens, who know nothing of his real background, believe him without question. However when nothing happens the famous man loses some of his glittering image as some monks realize he has lied about the woman. Spiritual leaders, even in America, are not supposed to lie. What else is he capable of? and who is he really? Twenty years later, both the Zen Master and his famous failed successor are dead. And so is Zen in America. At least one community decided not to allow a corrupt liar to take over their spiritual practice. Over time the world learns more about the background. This CIA agent and 33rd degree Mason, narcissist sociopath who hated women while pretending to worship them, this Luciferian hypnotist and slave handler and abuser whose advice to young men was: "Women are trash. Use them and throw them away" -- This Sabbatian son of the Jewish Mafia and Zionist agent who was poised to become a new American antiChrist -- got stopped by a little girl.

It's difficult to look back at the silly young woman who did all this mainly because she was in love at the time. Also, I had just come into some money, i.e. a Canada Council grant to write a novel. The first thing I did with it was buy a ticket to Greece. A few months earlier my mother had died, of complications from a 15-year battle with arthritis. My father had died of a heart attack six years earlier. I was 29, remarkably naive but also fairly sensitive, and heading into my first Saturn return. A few days ago I was telling Kelley Lynch about those years before she met Cohen in NY in the late 80s and became his agent while working for Marty Machat-- picking up his flagging career and getting him back on his feet with his comeback album I'm Your Man in 1988.
